Askival Lodge – a brick and thatch structure - is set upon a tall and steep kopje with long views to both the north – still remarkably light pollution free – and to the stunning Blouberg Mountains, 30 kms to the south.
Whilst the chief focus at Askival is that of game preservation and herd improvement, it is always necessary to manage populations, especially given the fenced nature of the ground and the deliberate lack of lions.
Unusually for the region, the bush – comprising chiefly acacia, but with abundant pockets of sesame, comifera, blackhook thorn and marula- is also complimented by open savannah plains and numerous dams and waterholes which are supported in the dry season by a strong aquifer running below the entire property. The ground is chiefly flat but contains one large and steep kopje, upon which the lodge is built, and some rolling rocky, well vegetated hills to the west. This variety of habitat enables a wide range of wildlife to thrive under all seasonal conditions, making visits rewarding throughout the year.
